This presentation provides an engaging exploration of autism through historical, clinical, and neurodiversity-informed perspectives. Participants will examine how understandings of autism have evolved over time, from early theories and diagnostic frameworks to contemporary approaches that emphasize strengths, identity, and inclusion. The session will explore key concepts in autism psychoeducation, including common characteristics, communication differences, sensory processing, executive functioning, and the impact of societal attitudes on autistic individuals and their families.
Through a combination of historical context, current research, and practical application, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of autism and develop language and strategies that support more affirming and effective interactions with autistic individuals across settings.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Describe major milestones in the history of autism and how diagnostic and societal perspectives have evolved over time.
Identify key characteristics of autism, including differences in communication, sensory processing, social interaction, and executive functioning.
Explain the principles of neurodiversity and their relevance to contemporary autism support and intervention.
Recognize common myths and misconceptions about autism and apply accurate, strengths-based psychoeducation.
Utilize affirming language and practical strategies to support autistic individuals and promote greater understanding among families, professionals, and communities.
