Foundations in Play Therapy

This class will provide 6 APT hours and cover the basic tenets of play therapy using the theory and foundational skills of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT). For those working towards RPT, these hours can count towards Seminal Theories, and/or Skills and Method.

Presenter Bio

Therapy with children can be difficult, whereas many are reluctant and unable to participate in talk therapy. This presentation will explore how to work with children from the foundations of CCPT. Child-centered play therapy is an evidenced based theoretical modality that can be used alone or in addition to other theories. This theory also allows children to process trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD, and other issues in a developmentally and culturally appropriate way. Dr. Phipps is an expert in play therapy and has taught the foundational play therapy class at UNCC several times. She believes knowing the basic process of this theory will foster an environment conducive to effective treatment. 

Session Objectives

Participants Will:

1. Identify two qualities necessary to foster an environment conducive to effective treatment in play therapy.

2. Explain the importance of the relationship when incorporating play therapy with a child client.

3. List two ways CCPT is a culturally competent approach with children.

4. Compile a list of skills necessary to conduct a CCPT session.

5. List themes seen in play therapy.

6. Describe setting and choice giving in CCPT.

Instructional Methodology: May include lecture, demonstration, audio/visual, case examples, experiential practice of techniques, and small group discussion.

Non-Credit Events: Registration, breakfast, lunch, reception events, committee/business meetings, networking sessions.

Ethics Hours/Academic Credit: This program offers no “ethics hours”. This program is not “academic” credit and CE hours awarded are not eligible toward fulfillment of a degree.
